Installing new fonts on Linux Ubuntu

There are several ways to add or install new fonts on Ubuntu or Linux Mint these could be done by install fonts using Linux command line, via Synaptic Package Manager or adding your downloaded fonts manually to Ubuntu font folder directory /usr/share/fonts to make your new fonts available system-wide. Ex: how to install Roboto font on Ubuntu by added roboto fonts in to Ubuntu font folder (see image below). It gives more impression when using this fonts with material design theme on your Ubuntu PC

Let's take a look these 3 method how to install fonts on Ubuntu or Linux Mint.

1. Installing new fonts from Synaptic Package Manager
- Open your Synaptic Package Manager, enter your password when it prompted.
- Search for "font" (without quote).
- Select your desire fonts to install, right click and choose "Mark for Installation".
install fonts on Ubuntu using Synaptic Package Manager - Apply, then wait until fonts installation is complete.

2. Installing fonts using Linux Ubuntu command line
This method installing font packages which available in the component of the repositories. for example installing Microsoft Truetype fonts on Ubuntu (msttcorefonts) using command :
sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts

3. Installing fonts manually by adding fonts into Ubuntu font folder directory
As i mention above, adding your downloaded fonts manually to Ubuntu font folder then your new fonts available system-wide. Downloading the fonts that you want then open your terminal ( ctrl + alt + T), then open folder as a root:
 gksu nautilus 
- navigate to /usr/share/fonts/
- copy font files to new location, ex: copy roboto folder which containt roboto font (see first image) to /usr/share/fonts/
- Then update the font cache database using command:
sudo fc-cache -f -v
